Inside the Montessori Centre Tucked into Manly’s Harbour Bushland

Many childcare centres sit alongside busy roads, shopping strips or apartment blocks, but Montessori Headland Early Learning Centre is tucked away in Manly’s bushland sanctuary at North Head.

With beautiful grounds among native flora and fresh air off the ocean up the hill, it would be easy for the Centre to rest on its laurels, but this is a Montessori education, which means specific values and methods to uphold.

Local parents have shown they value the Montessori approach as much as they appreciate the peaceful setting and easy drop-off. It’s perhaps for this reason that a space here has been so coveted over its 14 years.

What is the Montessori approach?

The Centre caters for children from infancy through to six years. Children choose from carefully prepared activities designed to build specific skills, including early maths concepts, fine motor coordination and language development. Materials lean toward carved wood and natural objects over the synthetics common in most centres.

Everyday tasks such as pouring water, preparing food, tidying, and caring for plants are treated as meaningful work. Mixed-age classrooms allow younger children to observe older peers, while older children build confidence through modelling and leadership.

Director Margaret Thwaites says independence sits at the heart of the Montessori approach.

“A famous quote from Dr Maria Montessori says, ‘Never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed.’ This principle guides how we support children to develop independence, confidence and persistence, allowing them the time they need to complete and repeat activities until they feel a sense of mastery.”

Many activities reflect everyday life. Children might chop fruit for morning tea, help with cleaning or pegging washing, care for classroom materials, or work together to build structures in the outdoor creek bed.

“Montessori education is all about preparation for life,” Margaret says.

Indoors, classrooms are structured and purposeful, with materials arranged to encourage concentration and independent work. Outdoors, the natural surroundings extend that environment, creating space for movement, observation and exploration. The two work together to build academic foundations and emotional confidence without rushing the early years, and children find genuine joy in it. This is structured and organised, not rigid.

Learning in a Natural Setting

Nature is woven into the program as part of everyday learning. Bushland areas around the centre form part of an integrated indoor–outdoor curriculum, giving children opportunities to explore, balance and observe. The location also allows for organised outings around the Sydney Harbour Trust precinct and nearby national park areas.

Children aged 18 months to six years take part in excursions including bushwalks, picnics and visits to the nearby Montessori primary school.

“The Montessori philosophy emphasises connecting with nature,” Margaret says. “Headland Montessori provides a setting where children can grow and learn surrounded by calm and natural beauty.”

A Longstanding Local Presence

Montessori Headland has operated at North Head for more than 14 years. Many families return with younger siblings after seeing how their first child developed, often noting growth in confidence and independence before the move to primary school. Its location supports a smaller, close-knit environment where relationships between families and educators run deep.

“It is much more than just a daycare centre. It has become a part of our little family,” says Simon, a current parent.

Families interested in learning more are welcome to arrange a private tour of the classrooms and grounds.
