Jonah’s Restaurant and Boutique Hotel at Whale Beach has been an icon for nearly a century. Winter, it turns out, is one of the best times to finally go, or make your return.
There is a version of Jonah’s that summer visitors rarely see. The restaurant is quieter; the balcony is yours. The ocean churned grey-green by winter swells, brings a drama that summer can’t match.
And a little beyond the break, humpback whales are now passing. If you’re there over lunch, as I was last week for my husband’s birthday, you’ll likely see a recurrent splash.
I took advantage of the binoculars at reception, the voyeur that I am, and looked through the lens at several breaching whales on their journey north. The experience goes down smoothly with some whites from the Hunter (Margan and Thomas Wines), too.

Perched on the clifftop above Whale Beach, Jonah’s has spent nearly a hundred years earning its reputation as one of Australia’s great oceanfront dining destinations. But beyond the accolades, what Jonah’s offers in the cooler months is something increasingly rare – unhurried hospitality and significant savings on a premium experience that can, to put it delicately, be inaccessible in a volatile economy.
Our Thursday lunch was at some points ridiculously perfect. Upon being seated a rainbow emerged right over the whale-shaped headland. Then there were the whale jumps, and the exquisite food. The kind you have a conversation about. And, of course, there was the wine. We were treated to some bonus wine samplings from their extensive list by General Manager Niels Sluiman.

Jonah’s holds one of the nation’s most extraordinary wine lists: more than 1,600 labels, with over 60 available by the glass, and the award last year for Australia’s Best List of Wines by the Glass to prove it.
While we love our cheap and cheerful local joints, there is a certain bliss to feeling unhurried, and un-herded on a wild, wholly wintery day. The vibe here is to come for a long lunch. You don’t have to, of course, but you’ll want to.
Linger over the wine list. Step out to the balcony and watch the light change over the water. The service is personal, the pace is yours, and if a whale surfaces while you’re mid-course, well, that’s all part of the service.
End of week special
We are pleased to let locals know that they are just now launching their winter season with a dining offer that makes one of the region’s finest restaurants an easy decision.
On Thursdays and Fridays throughout winter, you can enjoy two courses of your choice from the à la carte menu, plus a glass of sommelier-selected wine, for $99 per person. It is Jonah’s at its most accessible – the full experience, the views, the service, the wine expertise, without occasion as a prerequisite.
There is a risk, of course, that the wine is so good you go beyond that glass, and food so special you throw in an extra dessert or side, but that’s up to you. What’s on offer and most affordable will provide as wonderful and satiating experience as what we had.

We pick a Burrata with basil pesto, tomato gel, roasted pine nuts and crostini, and the Yellowfin Tuna with apple, cucumber and dill oil. For mains I can rarely refuse a Grilled Barramundi Fillet (with fennel cream, braised eschalots, spinach and chive oil), and my husband opts for the Wagyu Beef with parsnip puree, salt baked onion, Sichuan. For my taste the Burrata and Barra stood strongest.

It’s the finest of dining but still fulfilling; this is slow eating, drinking, watching. We didn’t know how much we needed this lunch until we were there, coming down to rest in a room full enough for a light buzz, but calm and quiet enough for a real conversation.

Wine Dinner Series
Head Sommelier Georgina Larsson and Executive Chef Rey Ambas are, as ever, the engine behind the experience at Jonah’s.
The pairing process runs deeper than most diners realise. “Our pairings can be changed throughout the season, depending on what we want to highlight in any given dish,” Georgina explains. “The à la carte menu is guided by seasonal availability, which allows the wine programme to evolve constantly. We try to stay off the beaten track, offering a chance for adventure in a glass. Wine, after all, can elevate the sensory perception of any dish.”
Chef Ambas puts it plainly: “Georgina and I tend to think the same way with menu items. There is a lot of behind-the-scenes talking between us working on flavours, textures, seasonality. There is so much that goes on prior to creating any menu.”

For those who want to go deeper into the Jonah’s food and wine experience, the Winter Wine Dinner Series returns in 2026 with Georgina at the helm selecting some of the best, rarest and most interesting wines in the cellar, matched to four courses of Jonah’s cuisine.
“A wine region or producer is featured, and the kitchen is guided by the sommelier,” Georgina explains. “It’s an incredible experience and, frankly, quite a lot of fun for everyone involved.”
The next Wine Dinner is on 19 June, with further evenings in August and September. Details and bookings via jonahs.com.au.
Truffle Dinner
Winter also brings one of Chef Ambas’s favourite seasons to cook: truffle season.
“Winter is one of the most exciting seasons,” he says. “All the cold, windy weather just asks for those amazing rich and warm flavours. One thing I am always looking forward to is Australian Black Truffles.”
Jonah’s sources premium truffles from Pipers Brook Truffles from the Tamar wine region in Tasmania, and on 10 July the kitchen will dedicate an entire dinner to showcasing them. Keep an eye on Jonah’s social pages for details and availability.

Winter Getaway Package
For when a long lunch at Jonah’s is still not nearly long enough. For those looking to make a proper weekend of it, the Winter Getaway Package offers one of the most compelling overnight experiences on the Northern Beaches, the kind of thing you’d expect to pay considerably more for at a property of this standing.
The package includes one night in an Ocean Retreat room, which includes a private balcony, ocean views, and a jacuzzi bath, alongside a glass of premium Australian sparkling wine on arrival, a three-course à la carte dinner, and a full à la carte breakfast the following morning.
At $399 per person twin share, available on Thursday and Sunday nights through to the end of August, it is the sort of offer that rewards those who know when to go. We didn’t stay overnight this visit, but checking into one of those Ocean Retreat rooms is firmly next on our list.
