Could This Northern Beaches School Be a Glimpse of Education’s Future?

Tucked away within the bushland of North Head, overlooking Sydney Harbour, is a school quietly rethinking what education can look like.

For more than four decades, Farmhouse Montessori School has been part of the Northern Beaches community, with a Pre-school campus in North Balgowlah, close to Manly Dam Reserve, and a Primary campus at North Head, serving children from Kindergarten to Year 6.

At its core is the Montessori philosophy, which supports each child’s natural stages of development. Rather than a standardised model, students are encouraged to work at their own pace, take ownership of their learning, and develop confidence in how they think, not just what they learn.

Under the leadership of new Principal Harshitha Ravikumar, the school continues to evolve, with a focus on creating an environment where children feel empowered to explore, think independently and develop a genuine love of learning.

Classrooms are calm, purposeful environments where teachers guide rather than direct, and where curiosity drives progress. Students are given the space to explore ideas in depth, collaborate across age groups, and take pride in their work.

What makes Farmhouse particularly unique is how learning extends beyond the classroom. Across both campuses, the natural environment plays an important role – whether through early learning experiences connected to the surroundings of Manly Dam, or the Primary school’s access to the unique landscape of North Head.

In an increasingly fast-paced and digital world, many parents are beginning to look for an education that balances knowledge with adaptability, creativity and self-direction. At Farmhouse, the focus is on developing capable, thoughtful individuals who are motivated from within.

Supported by a highly engaged parent community, the school fosters a culture of lifelong learning – not just for students, but for families and educators alike.
