Commuters have miraculously escaped injury with dashcam footage showing a runaway truck seemingly losing its brakes and plummeting down Warringah Road onto the Pittwater intersection in Brookvale at 7.20 am this morning.
Northern Beaches Police Area Command confirmed a 37-year-old man drove the Hino truck, which a witness said had a collision with a 38-year-old man in his Tesla at the intersection. There were no reports of injuries; however, the front right of the Tesla was reportedly partially damaged following the interaction.
The truck driver allegedly left the scene without exchanging particulars. The incident was reported to officers at Northern Beaches Police Area Command by both drivers a short time later.
Dramatic dashcam footage obtained by Manly Observer from a commuter waiting in the Warringah Road morning traffic shows the truck rearing into the opposite side of the road to avoid a collision before abruptly entering the Pittwater Road intersection and turning left towards Dee Why, without stopping.
The Warringah Road hill is historically notorious for fostering runaway oversize vehicles, hence the 20 km/h speed limit for trucks and buses on the road.
It’s currently unknown what caused the incident to occur; police say investigations are ongoing.
