Northern Beaches residents will soon have a closer opportunity to take part in paid early-stage medical research, with Nucleus Network opening a new clinic in St Leonards. Based at the North Shore Health Hub on Westbourne Street, the clinic expects its first Sydney studies to get underway around mid-September.
But what are clinical trials, and who gets to participate?
For many people, joining a clinical trial can feel like unfamiliar territory. Nucleus Network CEO Teena Pisarev said the Sydney expansion is intended to make that first step more accessible. People can already register their interest online, and anyone who takes part is reimbursed for the time and commitment each study requires.
“Every medicine available today started in a clinical trial, and our role is to provide a safe, professional environment where participants can contribute to the development of future treatments while being supported by an experienced medical and research team,” Pisarev said.
“As Australia’s leading Phase 1 clinical research organisation, Nucleus Network is excited to bring our expertise to Sydney and make clinical trials more accessible to people across the Northern Beaches and greater Sydney,” she said.
Who can take part?
The new Nucleus Network clinic will focus on early-stage studies, typically recruiting healthy men and women aged 18 to 65.
Participation can look quite different from one study to the next, Nucleus Network says. Some may require only day visits to the St Leonards clinic, while others may involve overnight stays ranging from a single night to more than 30 nights.
Reimbursement varies too. A handful of day visits is a different commitment from staying overnight for several weeks, so the amount reflects the time and involvement required.
What does a clinical trial involve?
If you’re curious but unsure whether a clinical trial is right for you, the first step is a short online or phone pre-screen. A few health questions help determine whether a particular study might suit you before you visit the clinic.
If a study looks like a potential match, the next step is an informed consent session before any medical checks begin.
During that session, the team talks you through the study in plain language, including what you’ll be asked to do, your rights and any potential risks, so you can decide whether you’re comfortable taking part. Participation remains voluntary, and medical professionals support and monitor participants throughout their involvement.
And if you attend a screening visit but are later ruled out for a reason outside your control, that visit is still reimbursed.
Where is Nucleus Network in Sydney?
For Northern Beaches residents, having the clinic in St Leonards simply makes taking part more practical, particularly if travelling further across Sydney had previously put you off.
The clinic is located on Level 5 of Tower B at the North Shore Health Hub, 7 Westbourne Street, St Leonards. Nucleus Network expects Sydney studies to become available from around 15 September, and expressions of interest are already open through its website.
