Most gyms rely on routine. You turn up, put your headphones in, and work through it.
At Alliance Jiu-Jitsu Sydney in Balgowlah, there’s no autopilot. Every session on the mat involves another person. You’re reacting, adjusting, and figuring things out as you go. It’s physical, but it’s also mental in a way most workouts aren’t.
That’s what keeps people coming back to BJJ.
“Each class provides a full body workout as well as a mental challenge,” founder Fabricio Correa says.
“BJJ helps promote strategic thinking while improving strength and cardio fitness.”

Often described as “human chess,” BJJ is about reacting, adjusting, and thinking a few moves ahead, all while physically engaged.
It’s that mix of physical and mental challenge that sets it apart.
Despite the grappling, the philosophy behind Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tends to surprise people.
“Martial arts teach you how to control your emotions and be calm during any situation,” Correa says.
“So it’s not about fighting, it’s about giving you the confidence not to fight.”
It’s why the sport is often referred to as “the gentle art,” and why the crowd here isn’t what you might expect.

On any given day, there are kids learning coordination and confidence, adults looking for something more engaging than a standard gym session, and older members who’ve found a way to stay active without high-impact training.
Kids’ classes start at age 4, with programs split into age groups through to teens. With around 300 young members, the focus goes beyond self-defence, building discipline, resilience, problem-solving skills and improved concentration.
Everyone trains together, just at their own pace. And for plenty of people, it’s the community that keeps them showing up.
Correa has been intentional about building that sense of community since opening in 2021, with families training together and members progressing side by side.
Every class involves working with a partner, so you’re constantly meeting people at a similar level. Over time, that builds familiarity, then connection.

Training is led by head coach Murilo Amaral, a multiple award-winning instructor, supported by a broader team working across different age groups and experience levels.
The gym also works with local schools and runs workshops during school holidays, extending that sense of community beyond its members.
It’s also found a natural home on the Northern Beaches, particularly among surfers drawn to its focus on balance, timing and control.
And while the mats are central, they’re not the whole picture.
The Balgowlah gym includes a full fitness area with weights and cardio equipment, along with recovery options like an infrared sauna, ice bath and remedial massage services.

It means members can approach it as more than a class, making BJJ a part of a broader routine built around training and recovery.
New members can start with a structured three-step trial, including an introductory private session with an instructor, designed to build confidence and ease them into training.
