A lot to learn as ‘The Castle’ opens doors to new students

The famous ‘castle on the hill’ has been a landmark in Manly since it was built in the late 19th Century – and had moments of fame as location for filming The Great Gatsby … and the wedding of Nicole Kidman & Keith Urban! But what was it, and what is it now?

‘The Castle’ was built in 1889, in neo-Gothic and Romanesque styles, as the first National Catholic Seminary in Australia. But since 1996, it has been the Northern Beaches Campus of the International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS)  – and the venue of the College’s Open Day on 17 August.

The ICMS Open Day is an opportunity for prospective students to get a taste of student life and a taste  for the full range of bachelor degrees on offer at ICMS.

While ICMS has a stellar reputation in the hospitality space, the College has grown to offer bachelor degrees across the board.

From traditional fields like business, sports, marketing, events, hospitality, property and fashion, to cutting-edge disciplines like the Bachelor of Information Technology with specialisations in Big Data and Analytics, and Cyber Security, ICMS provides students with a comprehensive education that blends theoretical knowledge with practical experience.

The most recent offering of a suite of Information Technology degrees is ICMS’ response to the high demand of IT-skilled professionals.

“IT professionals are in high demand. ICMS is here to bridge the gap,” says ICMS CEO Rowan Courtney-Connor.

ICMS Ranks Above Traditional Universities – QILT 2024

ICMS has made significant strides since its establishment over two decades ago.

For example, ICMS has demonstrated superior graduate outcomes compared to traditional universities, outperforming them in the 2024 QILT rankings.

ICMS has also been recognised as the top institution in Australia for undergraduate Hospitality, Sport and Recreation, and Tourism, achieving the highest employment rate (92%) for graduates in these fields in the 2024 QILT rankings.

Students comes from all over the world to study at ICMS

In 2023, ICMS was one of five finalists, and the only private provider in Australia, selected in the Employability category of the Australian Financial Review Higher Education Awards.

Around 2,000 students from 50 countries form part of the diverse student community, and every single one of them graduate with industry experience thanks to ICMS’ Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program.

WIL means that students are placed in internships with a suitable company from over 1,000 ICMS industry partners as part of their degree.

ICMS aims to empower students through a nurturing approach, using the vast amount of collective experience within the faculty, staff and student community.

Their claims it to be big enough to connect you, and small enough to connect with you.

“As the professional mentor, ICMS is a connected and accountable advisor to our students. We have created a personal environment that includes both informal and formal transmission of knowledge to help our students to achieve personal success in their professional lives,” said Rowan Courtney-O’Connor.

One recent local graduate is Julie Williams, who studied a Bachelor of Business (Fashion and Global Brand Management).

“I had the privilege of gaining hands-on experience in the realm of Public Relations and Marketing through an enriching two-year stint at Christian Dior Couture,” Julie says.

“This invaluable experience not only honed my strategic communication and brand management skills but also solidified my passion for the fashion industry taking me to new heights all the way over in Paris.”

Julie is now an executive with fashion bible InStyle magazine.
