Twilight at Taronga Zoo: What’s Left on the Bill?

The annual Twilight at Taronga concert series is here again, in the majestic setting of Taronga Zoo.

The entertainment began on 2 February, with solo sensation Meg Mac with plenty more over five consecutive weekends until Saturday 2 March when veteran Indie icons The Whitlams play the leafy arena, with guest double-bassist Scott Owen from The Living End.

Other highlights of this open-air extravaganza still to come include:

* From Swing to Soul with the James Morrison Quartet playing a two-part set that plays tribute to the giants of the Swing jazz era, such as Dizzy Gillespie and Oscar Peterson, followed by a journey on the Soul train with smooth classics from the likes of James Brown and Ray Charles.

* Drag Gala, featuring some of the country’s biggest drag stars, including the reigning queen of RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under, Isis Avis Loren, for a high-energy night of music and laughs that coincides with Sydney’s annual Mardi Gras festival.

And there’s even ‘Lil’ Twilight’ shows on Saturday mornings for the littl’uns (doors open 9am, shows run from 10am to midday). Check out Zindzi & The Zillionaires, with Play School presenter, actor and musician Zindzi Okenyo performing upbeat songs set to a head-bopping mix of RnB, Pop, Hip Hop and Rap.

And not forgetting The Waifs, Ball Park Music and John Butler are also on the bill, to round off the summer’s quality entertainment.

‘Taronga’ means ‘beautiful view’ in Dharug Aboriginal (the common language of the Indigenous peoples of the central Sydney region, including the local Cammeraygal). Indeed the landscaped terrace of the Twilight arena affords majestic views of Sydney Harbour, an ideal setting for a musical picnic while the sun settles on the horizon.
