It’s curtains for the iconic Collaroy Cinema, with receivers confirming the closure with Manly Observer yesterday, adding that the last session is set for this Saturday, 22 August. However the Mustaca family insists it is not the end, and they fully intend to reopen it.
Earlier this year, 22 May, property mogul Roy Mustaca’s business, Planet Warriewood Pty Ltd, went into receivership along with ten of their properties around the state.
Lender Metrics Credit Partners appointed receivers to take possession of the company’s investment properties to pay off its debt. Wahlburgers, located at 36-38 South Steyne, Manly and United Cinemas Warriewood at 4 Vuko Place were among the Northern Beaches properties on the chopping block.
The beachfront Wahlburgers restaurant has since ceased operations, but, in a turn of events in late June, Mr Mustaca announced the Warriewood Cinema complex was here to stay and will be running “business as usual.” Manly Observer confirmed with the appointed receiver Costa Nicodemou of Newpoint Advisory that the Warriewood cinema will remain open. However, the partner said they had made the decision to close Collaroy Cinema.
We reached out to Mustaca Group CEO, Sam Mustaca, who refuted any claims that the cinema will close permanently. He stated that although much of the process is currently confidential, the family is going through a major repositioning of its portfolio and that Roy intends to reopen the cinema down the line.
It’s currently unknown what led to the decision of the Collaroy Theatre closure. The business was not listed as one of the properties under Planet Warriewood’s receivership and in December 2025, even reinvigorated itself as an establishment that will add live performance to its cinematic offering, promising an exciting new chapter for the longstanding entertainment provider.
The cinema has been a staple of the suburb for decades, first opening 87 years ago on April 8, 1938. For now, the cinema will close indefinitely after this Saturday; its final session will play Spider-Man: Brand New Day at 7pm.
