A man has had a remarkable escape after his vehicle was crushed on the Spit Bridge

Update 8:45am NSW Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Dewberry says crews have managed to access a man, possibly in his forties, trapped in his crushed vehicle on the Spit Bridge.

“He is severely trapped and while they appear to be minor injuries we know these things can escalate. It appears to be a miracle survival at this stage but we don’t have the full picture yet,” he told Manly Observer.

“They are cutting, pushing, pulling. The trauma response team is there and all the right medical expertise is there ready for him.”

The Spit Bridge was closed southbound at 8:30am this morning, 24 February after the vehicle was crushed after colliding with a truck about 7:30am.

Police confirmed at 8:40am that rescue crews were still working to free the driver.

Traffic is very heavy southbound (city bound). Find an alternate route or delay travel.

Police formally issued a statement:

“Around 7.30am (Monday 24 February 2025), police attached to Northern Beaches Area Command were called to a crash between a car and truck on the Spit Bridge at the cross of Battle Boulevard Seaforth.

Emergency services are working to free the driver of the car.

Manly Road is closed at Sydney Road, southbound, and diversions are in place.”

Meanwhile at 9am hundreds of people have left buses stranded on the Burnt Bridge Deviation at Seaforth as the Spit Bridge remains closed and services are diverted.

Transport recommends anyone travelling to the city to redirect to the ferry services at Manly. It seems many plan to walk there.
