Northern Beaches locals can now visit Manly library any time, day or night, with the launch of a new 24-hour access trial.
Running from now until November, the initiative aims to provide greater flexibility for users aged 16 and over. You must register and undertake an induction to have access.
The trial follows the success of a similar program at Forestville Library, which has welcomed more than 80,000 after-hour visits since it began offering 24/7 access in 2022.
Northern Beaches Council says community feedback has been “overwhelmingly positive and respectful,” with most users taking advantage of the extended hours for study and work.

Mayor Sue Heins described the Manly launch as “a fantastic opportunity” for the community.
“Over the past year, Manly Library has undergone significant upgrades to ensure the safety and comfort of members during unstaffed hours and we look forward to welcoming the community at any hour that suits their lifestyle,” she said.
Based on the Forestville experience, Council said the use of the facility after hours varied, with the most common activity being study and work throughout the evening and weekends.
Council implemented a range of measures, including CCTV surveillance and duress alarms, to support users at all hours.
Funded by the State Library of NSW, the pilot will initially offer 24-hour access from Sunday to Thursday, with the possibility of expanding to a full seven day schedule depending on performance in the first phase.
Once registered, full members can browse the complete collection of books, eBooks, audiobooks and magazines outside regular opening hours. Facilities including free Wi-Fi, public computers, printing and scanning services, quiet study areas, and furnished reading zones are also available around the clock.
Registered users who have completed a side induction at Manly Library are able to use the ground and first floor.
