A man found injured by the side of the road in Wheeler Heights last night has died today.
The man, in his forties, was found by passersby just before 8.30pm 2 June 2026. Witnesses report he had facial injuries, possibly from the impact of a sudden collapse, and his heart had stopped.
Through the concerted efforts of first responders on scene, including an off duty nurse and paramedic, followed by tasked emergency responders who arrived via road and helicopter, the man was revived after significant and repeated efforts.
While police established a crime scene and launched an investigation into the incident, police today said it now appears to be the result of a medical episode.
Police confirmed the man died in hospital today, 3 June.
There was widespread community concern that it was a second incident of violence following the brutal assault of a man of a similar age in nearby Dee Why last week, but there appears to be no correlation whatsoever.
An autopsy will be needed before a final determination can be made on his cause of death.
The man in the Dee Why assault, which is alleged to have been by a group of young men at James Meehan Reserve about 11pm last Friday, 29 May, remains in a critical condition at Royal North Shore Hospital.
Anyone with information from the Dee Why assault is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
