Live music resurgence at Bally to help build on fundraising success

Highly acclaimed Blues ‘n’ Roots acts to perform on the Beaches

A recent successful fundraising campaign has helped Balgowlah Bowling & Community Club (The Bally) ensure its doors stay open. The Club was in danger of having to close due to financial pressures, but generous donations from locals have ensured The Bally remains the place of community, support and friendship that it’s been for over 60 years.

To continue its financial recovery, the Club has decided to present regular live music shows starting on Friday September 13.

That night, The Bally opens its doors for the first of what will become regular monthly concerts featuring great Australian musicians. Artists appearing at the launch include Bluesfest Byron Bay regular, Genevieve Chadwick and her band, PLUS Festival favourites and the band that supported Suzi Quatro at The Enmore Theatre last year, The SunBears.

Genevieve Chadwick

Rarely have two bands of this quality appeared on the same bill at a Sydney suburban venue.  A much-lauded live performer, Chadwick claimed the 2013 People’s Choice Award at the Telstra Road to Discovery Finals in Tamworth. There followed two acclaimed and accomplished records, ‘Riding the Wind, Forgetting Time’ and the self-titled ‘Genevieve Chadwick’. The latter was a collaboration with the global Playing For Change project and resulted in invitations to play the nation’s most coveted Blues and Roots festivals, notably Bluesfest in Byron Bay.

Genevieve has shared stages with many of Australia’s leading acts including You Am I, The Screaming Jets, Dave Faulkner (Hoodoo Gurus), Diesel, Mark Gable (Choirboys) and Richard Clapton. In recent years she’s taken a break from touring but is now back, refreshed, reinvigorated and raring to go with a whole bunch of great new songs. She’s been working on the new material with drummer and producer Syd Green, formerly of 19Twenty and now the Kasey Chambers’ band. The show at The Bally represents the start of a full tour, which will pass through grass-roots venues across NSW, before she again returns to performing at major festivals.

“I played the original Eastern Lounge way back in 2011”, says Genevieve, “I’ve always loved the shows and the audiences they attract. I can’t wait to play The Bally on September 13 with those legends The SunBears.”

The SunBears

Since thundering onto the Blues Rock scene in 2020, The SunBears have not stopped wowing crowds and releasing award-winning music. The band has released six singles, three of which reached No. 1 on the Australian National AMRAP charts. Renowned for their explosive Live performances, The SunBears have supported legend Suzi Quatro at The Enmore Theatre, played at some of Australia’s most iconic festivals and toured Europe.

This Double Headliner bill will prove to be an unforgettable live music experience. And in October, The Bally presents a superb quality tribute to all-time Aussie favourites The Divinyle, while in November it’s The Mezcaltones plus LamBros.
