It’s not unusual to see a Northern Beaches resident wandering the suburbs with their pet, but a new kid on the block has recently attracted public attention.
Billy ‘the city’ goat was adopted as a rescue by the Glover family a few months ago and has quickly become an icon, turning heads as his new owners embark on regular walks around Freshwater and Curl Curl.
Though, his new fans may have noticed his absence in the last week. The goat has recently undergone emergency surgery at Camden University Vet Hospital Animal Hospital due to stones found in his bladder; the procedure was a success but at quite the cost to the family.
The unique choice to house and care for the goat didn’t trickle down to an alternative lifestyle, but rather to a response to a cry for help from a farm animal that has had a tough run from the get-go.
“Billy was quite young when he was found. His mum was tied up to a fence because she had a broken leg and would not feed Billy. So when the rescue team found out about them after they were reported to the RSPCA, they went in and found him. They were severely neglected,” Madi, 15, the eldest daughter, told Manly Observer.
When Billy was found, he was in a poor state; he had a severe leg infection and needed blood transfusions; his mother, worse off, had to be euthanised. The goat’s temporary carer called the Glovers soon after to seek their assistance.
Madi, her mother, Susie, and younger sister, Emily, have been rehabilitating animals since 2022, originally helping ill dairy calves; their Oxford Falls farm now houses all types of animals from lambs to alpacas and more. Once rehabilitated, the animals are either adopted by others or join the Glover commune.
Billy’s electric personality that is not unlike that of your common pooch quickly stole the hearts of the family, solidifying his place on the farm and the Northern Beaches.
“Billy sleeps in my bed. He loves getting in bed and having a cuddle. He sleeps on the lounge and watches TV with us. He’s definitely blended into the family very nicely,” Madi retold. “He goes on walks around, Freshy and Curly, and he loves the attention from everyone… It’s great seeing the community support and love Billy just as much as we do.”
The city goat’s most recent surgery was a success, and he is recovering well. However, the procedure cost over $7000, and his ongoing recovery will be even more. The family has been happy to pay the bills, but with important work to be done, they have turned to the community – who have come to adore Billy – for any assistance in funding his healing journey.
“It would be amazing for anyone who can donate to donate and even just share his story to the right people, because every single dollar goes to saving Billy and making sure he has a smooth recovery,” Madi said.
