A Ferris wheel is coming to Manly Beach, albeit temporarily, in a first on for the ocean beachfront.
Standing more than 25 metres high and located opposite the Corso, the wheel will be the headline addition to this year’s Rise Manly winter festival from 19 – 28 June, (update – it has now been confirmed to remain until Sunday 19 July!) promising panoramic views across the Pacific that even the most dedicated seagull would envy. (From their POV, though, a stray chip beats anything.)
It’s a new addition to the celebration of local businesses and their wares, following on from the success of last year’s Rise.
Manly has had Ferris wheels before of course, the Fun Pier at Manly Wharf ran one from 1931 until demolition in 1989, its outline a fixture above the harbour. But that was on the cove side.
Rise Manly runs June 19-26, with live street performances, light installations, a silent disco tour and ski parties. Expect warming winter movies and winter-themed menus, including a Euro-esque fondue and wine experience at Henry G’s.
With a nod to Vivid, Manly will be lit up with projection onto the historic Town Hall, while the Corso’s ground surface transforms into a canvas of light.
For the more active, a 1km swim from Manly to Shelly Beach celebrates the winter solstice (Ice Cold Classic) while fundraising for people in need.
Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins says it’s a thrill to see Rise Manly return. “The program was such a success last year and there are plans to build on this with more surprises — including the Ferris wheel,” she says.
Local shops, restaurants, bars, cafes, and fitness and wellness businesses are teaming up for an array of special events and experiences. More on Rise Manly can be found on the website.
