Raw sewage chokes Curl Curl lagoon

Untreated sewage has overflowed into Greendale Creek (Curl Curl Lagoon) heavily contaminating the already polluted local waterway.

Sydney Water has confirmed with Manly Observer today, 8 September, that crews had traced the source to a sewer blockage in Powells Road, Brookvale. The blockage was cleared and the overflow stopped on 6 September, they said.

Sydney Water is undertaking clean-up and environmental monitoring activities, including water quality testing, aeration of the creek and ongoing inspections.

They have warned people to avoid swimming, fishing and walking dogs in the area while the assessment continues, though it is considered unsafe for recreational use in general.

“This work will continue until the site has been fully assessed and validated by our specialist teams. Sydney Water thanks the community for its patience while remediation and clean-up efforts continue,” they said in a statement.
