Wakehurst reopens this morning after evening deluge

Wakehurst Parkway has finally reopened this morning after a period of heavy rainfall last night ( Tuesday, 13 October) which closed the Narrabeen-Oxford Falls route and caused flooding and damage in parts of the Northern Beaches.

The heaviest rain fell between 8.30pm and 10.30pm, according to Wendy Camelotti from Manly SES.

Volunteers spent the night on roof jobs, calls about water entering homes and a lot of drain unblocking.

Flash flooding hit Pittwater Road from opposite Nolan’s Reserve through to Balgowlah Road at Francis St, and on Pittwater Rd at Dee Why – all regular trouble areas during heavy rain.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Terrey Hills gauge, the closest BOM station to the Parkway, recorded 67.4mm in the 22 hours to 7am on Wednesday.

Most of it came in a short burst. The gauge went from 8.4mm at 8pm to 40.8mm at 10pm, with 16.8mm falling in the half hour to 9.30pm alone.

For flood or storm help, call the NSW SES on 132 500. In a life-threatening emergency, call Triple Zero (000).
