Young people throwing eggs and water balloons in Avalon
At about 7pm on Friday, 15 May 2026, police attended the grounds of a supermarket at Old Barrenjoey Road in Avalon Beach after reports of a crowd of misbehaving young people.
The bulk of the crowd dispersed when the police arrived, however, they spoke to a 13-year-old boy from Cromer who had in his possession a number of eggs and water balloons.
No criminal offence was detected at the time; however, the boy was given a move-on direction in accordance with section 197 of the Law Enforcement (Powers and Responsibilities) Act 2002.
Police confiscated the eggs and water balloons.

Tinder date leads to sextortion
On Monday, 18 May 2026, a man from Cromer spoke to a person on Tinder.
They switched over to an online messaging app where the man video-called the other person and exposed intimate images of himself.
The scammer recorded the video call without the man’s consent and then demanded $1,000.
The scammer threatened to share the intimate images with the man’s friends. The man refused to pay and reported the matter to the police. The scammer posted the intimate images on Instagram.
The victim reported the incident to the eSafety Commissioner for help in removing the posts. Preliminary inquiries show the scammer used a phone that originated in the Philippines.
The victim followed the eSafety Commissioner’s advice on sextortion. He stopped contact, didn’t pay, and reported it.

Scammers net $3,500 in business e-mail compromise
On Friday, 15 May 2026, a woman from Killarney Heights received an e-mail from a scammer who purported to be her boss.
The communication switched to text, and the scammer instructed the woman to buy gift cards for staff rewards.
The woman bought seven $500 Razer gift cards and provided the gift card codes to the scammer.
The victim lost $3,500, and inquiries are underway to trace the phones and email used by the scammer.
A similar e-mail was sent to the woman’s colleague, who did not engage with the scammer.
