Major Police Operation in Avalon

A major police operation unfolded in Therry Street, Avalon at around 4pm this afternoon Saturday, 9 May, with the Public Order and Riot Squad and Tactical Operations Unit called in.

The street was blocked off during the response, with multiple specialist police units deployed. Social media rumours suggested a hostage situation, but police clarified through Manly Observer that the person involved was alone and likely suffering from a mental health episode.

They were a danger to themselves but the public was not at risk.

The man was later subdued by taser and taken to hospital for a mental health assessment.

Police later reiterated that mental health was a significant factor in his behaviour and confirmed there were no injuries.

“The incident has concluded with the man being taken for assessment,” police said.

“Due to the sensitive nature of the incident we will not be confirming or providing [further] details,” police said.
