Local rugby union coach faces weapon and DV charges

A local rugby coach and owner of a Northern Beaches gym has been charged with multiple offences related to domestic violence and weapon possession.

James Brodie , of J-Train, has this week pleaded not guilty to two charges of attempt to stalk or intimidate, two charges of stalk or intimidate,  three charges for possess or use a prohibit weapon without authorised permit, two destruction of property charges, two common assault charges and one charge of assault occasioning in actual bodily harm – all three alleged assaults being domestic violence related.

However, he pleaded guilty to one gun charge related to not taking the proper precautions of ensuring his CZ.22 calibre rifle was kept safely at his rural property.

Please note the above listed charges have been updated as we incorrectly stated there were three gun charges, where there was one.

Aside from owning and running an athletics performance gym Brodie is well-known within the sporting community, particularly amongst the rugby union scene. The strength and conditioning coach has worked with many prominent local rugby teams over the years including the Warringah Rats, Manly Marlins and the Forest Rugby Club.

The attempt to stalk or intimidate charge as well as the assault occasioning in actual bodily harm go as far back as 2022 in Manly. The two other common assault charges relate to allegations from late last year in October and earlier this year in March, both also in Manly.

The destruction of property charges were in relation to the alleged victim’s mobile phone in January 2025 and a wooden picture frame and cabinet in October 2024.

The possession or use of weapon charges relate to a separate date to the other charges in August 2025.

Brodie was excused from attending Manly Local Court on 30 September and was represented by his attorney. He was given conditional bail and is expected back in court 4 May 2026.
