Lismore flood relief helpers seek help for transport expenses

With fuel prices soaring to an average of $2.20 a litre for diesel and unleaded petrol, a Northern Beaches removals company transporting an eight-tonne truck’s worth of donations to the victims of the disastrous Lismore floods are seeking help in covering basic petrol expenses.

The donations, now being distributed among flood-impacted households, were given by kind-hearted Northern Beaches residents after Wills from VW Removals, a Dee Why-based removals company, made a Facebook request for clothes, medical supplies, bedding, non-perishables, children’s toys/clothing, tools and toiletries.

On 14 March he posted: “The team at VW Removals will be travelling up to Lismore with our large 8t truck and are requesting donations to take up with us. We plan to stay up for the week to help with the clear up currently ongoing.

“We will be leaving from Sydney on Sunday 20th March and heading up to Lismore and Mullumbimby and surrounding areas dropping off supplies along the way and assisting with whatever is required.”

The response was overwhelming – Northern Beaches residents have been very generous in aiding the flood-affected in Northern NSW – and Tom from Global Self Storage in Brookvale provided storage facilities for the goodwill gifts whilst a team of volunteers sorted, labelled and boxed them.

Wills and his driver companion Jai are now in the flood-damaged region distributing the necessities to help with the multi-million-dollar recovery operation.

Manly Observer received an update on the charity run just prior to its departure: “Eight tonnes of donations including nappies, toiletries, hygiene care packs, men’s and ladies clothing, kids clothing and toys and also donations of tools, brooms and cleaning products are all filling this truck to the brim…

“The Lismore rugby clubs will take on the donations and store them to start to offer on to the community.

“We are looking for some local donations to help fuel the cost of transporting all the goods – with petrol prices as they are. Wills the owner is prepared to pay the fuel and his workers’ time to get the goods up there, but any donations would be much appreciated. If any local business can offer fuel cards or donating money would be great.”
