Hey Gritty Rollers: A Wednesday with the Dee Why Wheelies

After a motorcycle accident in Tamworth in 1980 left him paralysed, Gerry Hewson didn’t think he’d re-discover the adrenaline rush of tearing around a dirt track on two-stroke 250cc Suzuki.

And then he rolled his wheelchair to the top of Spit Road … and started on down.

Then he won a gold medal at Atlanta in 1996.

Today he’s the Godfather of Wheelchair Basketball in Australia and spends his Wednesday afternoons overseeing games at Dee Why PCYC.

And you may join him.

The northern beaches Wheelies play basketball every Wednesday from 4-6pm.

It’s free, excellent for upper body fitness (and lungs) and very good fun, as the Editor of The Beaches Champion Matt Cleary discovered.
