Hey Gritty Rollers: A Wednesday with the Dee Why Wheelies

After a motorcycle accident in Tamworth in 1980 left him paralysed, Gerry Hewson didn’t think he’d re-discover the adrenaline rush of tearing around a dirt track on two-stroke 250cc Suzuki.

And then he rolled his wheelchair to the top of Spit Road … and started on down.

Then he won a gold medal at Atlanta in 1996.

Today he’s the Godfather of Wheelchair Basketball in Australia and spends his Wednesday afternoons overseeing games at Dee Why PCYC.

And you may join him.

It’s free, excellent for upper body fitness (and lungs) and very good fun, as the Editor of The Beaches Champion Matt Cleary discovered.

Support quality local news

Manly Observer is an experiment in providing non-sensationalist hyperlocal news on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. We cover the big news across the LGA, but with a hyper focus on the Manly electorate encompassing Balgowlah, Seaforth, Freshwater, Brookvale and Curl Curl up to Dee Why. It is run by those living in the community for the benefit of an informed community. We care about an informed and connected community. That’s it. Simple.
