The Red Cross charity store in Belgrave Street Manly, which provides essential income to the Australian Red Cross by retailing previously-loved clothing, books, music, movies, household items and other life-affirming items, is desperate for store assistants.
Manly store manager Suzanne Creegan told Manly Observer, “many businesses have suffered due to COVID in a wide variety of ways. For charities like Red Cross, it’s the volunteer workforce – many volunteers have either decided to take a break or not to return.”
In order to continue their work of providing funds for emergency aid, medical assistance, advice, welfare, and recovery grants to areas stricken by natural disasters and conflicts, the store needs additional volunteers.
Not all of us can provide direct assistance and comfort to those impacted by floods, fires and other extreme weather events, nor are we available to travel to conflict zones and administer First Aid and relief.
However, volunteering your time in retail, customer service or administration is also essential humanitarian aid work, and you’re significantly closer to home.
“All money raised through the shop helps Red Cross support communities in need,” Suzanne explained. “You are probably aware that Red Cross staff and volunteers have been on deck since February in flood evacuation and recovery centres across NSW and Queensland, and I love the fact that volunteers in our shop can help support that activity and much more, all from the relative comfort of a dry store.”
There are many ways you can volunteer your skills, gain important experience and make friends. As a volunteer for Red Cross Manly (minimum commitment of four hours a week), the working schedule and tasks are variable and can be adapted to suit your personal schedules.
Plus, you also get a staff discount on the many treasures that go on sale!
