The Manly Spin-a-thon is on again – so save the date on Saturday, December 7, to put the pedals to the metal and help raise funds for youth mental health services on the Northern Beaches.
Organised by Proveda Foundation in partnership with Manly Business Chamber and ANTHEMCYCLE, the Spin-a-thon is a community fundraising event aimed to raise much-needed funds for youth mental health programs on the Northern Beaches.
Last year’s event raised more than $25,000 for Waves of Wellness (WOW) Foundation, funding Surf Therapy Programs for local youth and you can help make this year’s event even more successful.
What’s involved?
You can enter the Spin-a-thon as an individual or get some mates together to form a team. There’ll be 27 stationary bikes set up by ANTHEMCYCLE along Sydney Road (the closed path just off the Corso in Manly).
This ride is all to the beat of the music in an outdoor non-competitive environment.
Riders will be guided through a spin class by an experienced instructor – so it doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned spinner or trying for the first time. You can ride at whatever pace works for you. And you can choose to direct your donations to a specific participating charity or support all the organisations involved.
StretchLab Balgowlah will be providing free group stretch sessions after each ride segment to participants.
You can donate by visiting the registration page and clicking the “donate now” button for whichever charity you would like to support. Donations are tax-deductible and donors will receive a receipt via email.
This year’s event will again support Waves of Wellness, and four other vital local community support organisations – Empowering Parents in Crisis (EPIC), KYDS Youth Counselling, Harrison Riedel Foundation and Proveda Foundation.
About the charities
EPIC provides peer support to parents of young people in crisis. EPIC recognises parents as first responders to their children and supports them by creating a safe, non-judgemental community that empowers parents with the knowledge, skills and confidence to enable them to best support their young person, their family and themselves. https://www.empoweringparentsincrisis.com
KYDS is a community-based non-profit that ensures young people aged 10-18 can reach out for support without the need for a Medicare card, GP referral or mental health plan, delivering about 7500 counselling sessions annually. https://www.kyds.org.au
Waves of Wellness is an Australian mental health surf therapy charity supporting our community with free mental health programs. We run clinical-based surf therapy programs so struggling people receive the needed help. We call it ‘health by stealth’. https://www.foundationwow.org
Harrison Riedel Foundation, founded by local mum Amanda Riedel in memory of her teenage son, has created a school program to complement their YourCrew app and help young people navigate their teenage years in a safe way. It’s about having the right conversation at the right time and getting in early before things become unmanageable. https://www.harrisonriedelfoundation.com
Proveda is the new name for what was formerly Community Care Northern Beaches (CCNB), established in 1994, and now continuing still as a not-for-profit entity to provide grants, and coordinate referrals for people in need, to provider partners in many community care areas including aged care, disability and mental health, and specialist services including suicide prevention, dementia awareness and even hoarding issues, assisting over 2,500 people each year through some of life’s most difficult times. https://proveda.com.au
“We love where we live, and we believe we must give where we live,” says Jessie Williams, Proveda’s Community Programs Manager. “This annual fundraiser with our charity partners is our way of showing up for young people in our community who need extra support. Please chip in what you can.”
With over 75% of mental health issues surfacing before the age of 25, the Spin-a-thon highlights a pressing need in the community.
Zali Steggall, Federal Member for Warringah, attended last year’s event and says: “We know youth mental health is our biggest cause of deaths, of suicide, for young people. We need to do more. These problems are complex, but we can’t let things continue as they are.”
Joel Pilgrim CEO of Waves of Wellness says: “We’re stoked to be back at the Spin-a-thon this year! It’s amazing to see the community come together for such a great cause, and with the huge success of last year, we’re excited to do it all again. A big thank you to the Proveda Foundation for their continued support in helping us raise much-needed funds for our evidence-based youth mental health programs right here on the Northern Beaches.
“We’re incredibly passionate about youth mental health at Waves of Wellness Foundation, so it’s going to be a great day full of energy, positivity, and sweat – all for an important cause. Let’s saddle up, and make a real impact together.”
