Vehicle thefts lead cops into two pursuits

Two separate police pursuits over stolen vehicles occured on the Northern Beaches this week, including one in Manly overnight.

At about 3am this morning, Thursday 31 October, officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command were patrolling Victoria Parade, Manly, when they attempted to stop a silver scooter, as the rider and pillion passenger were not wearing helmets.

When the rider failed to stop, a pursuit was initiated.

A short time later the pursuit was terminated at the intersection of Osbourne Road and East Esplanade, after the motorcycle hit a curb and the two left on foot.

Following inquiries, police arrested a 29-year-old man on Osbourne Road.

He was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital for medical assessment and released at 13:20 and taken back to the police station for charges.

Further inquiries revealed the motorcycle was stolen from an address in the Balgowlah area at night on the previous night, 30 October.

A second, unrelated pursuit was initiated in Newport on Tuesday, 29 October, when police were called to a home on Calvert Parade following reports of a break and enter, where a vehicle was stolen.

A short time later, police spotted the vehicle travelling at the intersection of Wakehurst Parkway and Frenchs Forest Road East.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle and when it failed to pull over a pursuit was initiated. However, the pursuit was terminated a short time later on Parramatta Road, Broadway, due to safety concerns.

Inquiries are still ongoing.

As investigations continue, anyone with information for either of these events is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
