Ever dreamed of acting, performing or writing? A new Manly-based amateur group has formed to bring like-minded locals together to explore the world of theatre.
It was first created by local Zoe Hudson in January under the name Acting and Performance Manly, and grew quite large after Manly Observer put out a call for expressions of interest to participate. Now it is ready for upgrade, and has relaunched as The Manly Theatre Group.
Manly Theatre Group convenor Zoe Hudson said, “The interest in a community based grassroots theatre group has been fantastic and we think it’s time to take the next step to formalise the group. The Working Committee met recently and decided on a new name”.
Zoe said the Manly Theatre Group is making theatre more accessible by running evening fortnightly script reading sessions and monthly writing workshops for Manly locals.
Participants in the script reading sessions read and perform ten minute scripts in a very informal and supportive environment, she said.
The writing workshops, on the other hand, will be run by another local Philip Clay and consist of reviewing a draft script of any genre that a participant has written, talk through ideas and experiment with plots and characters.
“The focus is on giving locals an opportunity to dip their toe in acting, hear their own voice and simply have some fun with new people”. “There is also a longer-term goal to hold performances around Manly with locally written plays,” Zoe added.
No experience is required for either session and everyone is welcome to participate. Activities are free however a gold coin donation is appreciated for script printing costs.
The next Writing Workshop will be on Wednesday 6th April at 8pm at The Boardroom at HPL Law Group, 22 Darley Road in Manly and the next Script Reading Session will be on Monday 11th April at 6:30pm at Manly Library.
