Goodbye ALDI, Hello Gelato Messina

The ALDI store at Manly Wharf will be closing permanently later this month with no plans to find an alternative location in the Manly area.

The popular discount grocery chain confirmed with Manly Observer today that it will not be renewing its lease and, while it is always open to considering new locations, another Manly store was not in its immediate future.

A spokesperson for ALDI corporate confirmed today: “We are closing ALDI Manly Wharf store, and the last day of trading will be 14 September.

“Since opening, local residents have embraced our award winning products and Special Buys for the last 17 years and we are thankful for the ongoing support we have received from the community.

“Since opening, local residents have embraced our award winning products and Special Buys for the last 17 years and we are thankful for the ongoing support we have received from the community.

“Our store network has grown steadily and we are now taking steps to refine the geography of our stores, therefore we have decided not to renew the lease at our Manly Wharf store.

“We acknowledge, and are sorry for the inconvenience this will cause for regular shoppers to the store. To continue enjoying our high-quality products and unbeatable value, we encourage our shoppers to visit the nearby ALDI Balgowlah store.”

There is also an Aldi in Brookvale and Dee Why.

The spokesperson confirmed all of employees at Manly Wharf would remain employed at alternative ALDI stores.

While the Supermarket giant did not give a reason for its departure, patronage of Manly Wharf has been significantly impacted by the pandemic.

Messina to open Manly store

Gelato Messina

Meanwhile, popular ice cream chain Gelato Messina confirmed with us today its plans to open a store in Manly “in a few months”.

Messina’s social media team confirmed they had signed a lease at the former Attik site, on the corner of Market Lane and Sydney Road.

The former Attik clothing store has apparently just been rented for a new Messina ice cream store.

It is at least the eighth ice cream chain currently operating on or near the Corso.

Messina is a very popular ice cream brand which first opened in Sydney in 2002, they have more than a dozen stores in NSW.

They have very elaborate offerings from smashed up cheesecake to red velvet cake. They also use unusual savoury flavours in their Messina specials such as bacon or potato chips.

Messina offered a drive through pop at Harbord Hotel in Freshwater last year, which proved popular with locals.
