Citizens arrest car thieves at Balgowlah

About 8pm last Tuesday, 30 September 2025, residents confronted two young males they suspected of breaking into cars on Barrabooka Street in Balgowlah. Although the suspects walked away, the vigilant residents remained concerned about further criminal activity.

The residents drove through the neighbourhood and spotted the two suspects in an apparent stolen vehicle. When the thieves attempted to flee, they crashed the stolen car and abandoned it on Vista Street. The residents pursued them on foot, discovered them hiding beneath a car, and detained them until police arrived.

Police arrested two teenage males and transported them to Manly Police Station. The 16-year-old was charged with entering a vehicle without the owner’s consent and being carried in a conveyance taken without the owner’s consent. The 15-year-old, who police allege was the driver, faces multiple charges including taking and driving a conveyance without the owner’s consent, entering a vehicle without the owner’s consent, unlicensed driving, negligent driving, and failing to provide particulars to another driver.

Both teenagers were initially refused bail by police but were later granted conditional bail. They are scheduled to appear at Surry Hills Children’s Court on 25 November for the 16-year-old and 21 October for the 15-year-old.

The residents involved were commended for their actions.

Suspected base jumper results in multi-agency response at North Head

On Tuesday, 30 September 2025, around 5am, witnesses watching the sunrise at Yiningma Lookout, Scenic Drive, North Head, saw a man leap from the cliff wearing a backpack.

The witnesses contacted the police, who promptly responded and coordinated a multi-agency search of the cliff base and sea.

Emergency service resources included NSW Fire and Rescue drone operations, helicopter support from NSW Ambulance and the Marine Area Command. The man who jumped was not located, and the search was eventually called off.

Police reviewed CCTV of the incident and are confident the man activated a parachute as he jumped from the cliff top.

Base jumping is an offence captured by Section 8A of the Summary Offences Act 1988 – ‘Climbing on or jumping from buildings and other structures’. The penalty ranges from a fine, and up to three months imprisonment.

Gift cards sound alarm bells for scam at Mona Vale

On 11 September 2025, a Mona Vale couple received a call from someone purporting to be from Austrac.

The caller sought personal information and payment for undisclosed matters and tricked the victims into paying $6,000 with Apple gift cards.

The victims’ bank deemed the transactions suspicious and contacted them about a potential scam.

They stopped buying more gift cards and were fortunate to have some funds returned because they reported the scam and put a stop on gift card transactions.

Gift cards should sound alarm bells for anyone receiving unsolicited calls for payment. No financial institution will request payment in Apple gift cards, and if they do, the community is advised to cease communication and report it to the police.

Scamwatch has a simple and effective crime prevention message: “Asked to pay by gift card? STOP.”
