A Manly house on Alexander Street was damaged by fire earlier this week after an electric blanket, activated to keep their kitty warm, caught fire.
The blanket sparked a fire in the living area at about 9:20pm on Saturday, 24 May 2025, but, thankfully, alert neighbours raised the alarm and local crews arrived quickly to extinguish the fire.
There was no structural damage, and all were accounted for.
NSW Fire and Rescue advise that electrical appliances and faults cause almost 40 per cent of home fires. They added you are twice as likely to die in a home fire if you don’t have a working smoke alarm and this is a timely reminder, as we move into winter, to ensure homes have a working smoke alarm.
Two women steal from a charity shop
At about 7pm on Monday, 26 May 2025, two women made their way into the Australian Red Cross store at Darley Road, Manly.
They later returned at 2:30am and stole clothing and footwear from a rear storage room. The room was equipped with CCTV cameras that recorded the theft.
One woman is described as being in her forties, thin build with her brown hair pulled back into a ponytail and she wore a white jacket and a yellow striped top, light pink pants and white sneakers. The other woman wore a white puffer jacket, black pants and white sneakers.
Police examined the crime scene for forensic evidence.
Anyone with information about this matter is urged to contact Dee Why Police Station (9971 3399) or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or here.
Stolen mail, cash and drugs found during Manly arrest
At about 8:00am on Thursday, 29 May 2025, staff challenged an 18-year-old woman at a licensed premise on The Esplanade, Manly. She had made her way into the bar area when the staff realised she was an intruder and called police.
The woman was searched by police and they found her in possession of what police allege was stolen property. Those items included over 30 mail items, cash, and drugs. Police will allege they found her in possession of small quantities of heroin and methamphetamine.
She was taken to Manly Police Station where she was charged with ‘Break, enter and steal’, ‘Goods in custody’, ‘Deal with property proceeds of crime’, ‘Dishonestly obtain financial advantage’, and ‘Possess prohibited drug’. She was refused police bail and remained in custody overnight to appear at Manly Local Court on 30 May 2025.
Police will also allege that she stole credit cards and PINs from mailboxes and withdrew cash from accounts.
Mail theft is a precursor to identity fraud and police recommend securing mailboxes as the first step in protecting against this type of crime.
