Pittwater By-Election 2024: Meet your candidates

On Saturday, 19 October 2024, a by-election will be held for the seat of Pittwater after Liberal MP and former Northern Beaches councillor Rory Amon resigned following charges relating to historical child sex offences.

This means that a new representative must be elected by Northern Beaches residents living in the Pittwater Electorate.

Am I in the Pittwater Electorate?

The Legislative Assembly District of Pittwater holds 56,345 (as of 2023) electors and occupies an area of 191 square kilometres, according to the NSW Electoral Commission.

The district includes, partially or wholly, the following localities and postcodes: Avalon Beach, Bayview, Bilgola Beach, Bilgola Plateau, Careel Bay, Church Point, Clareville, Coasters Retreat, Collaroy Plateau, Cottage Point, Duffys Forest, Elanora Heights, Elvina Bay, Great Mackerel Beach, Ingleside, Ku-Ring-Gai Chase, Lovett Bay, McCarrs Creek, Mona Vale, Morning Bay, Narrabeen, Newport, North Narrabeen, Palm Beach, Scotland Island, Terrey Hills, Warriewood, and Whale Beach.

Meet the candidates

On 4 October at 10am, The ballot was drawn in Warriewood in early October to determine which candidate is placed where on the voting paper – depending on who you ask, prime position is Group A. All candidates gave the ballot box a good shake for luck, and Doug Rennie from the Libertarian Party (formerly Liberal Democrats) was rewarded by being picked first and scoring Group A. Rennie only recently announced his candidacy on 28 September. Independent candidate Jacqui Scruby snagged Group B, while NSW Liberal candidate Georgia Ryburn got Group C.

Why should we vote for you?

I have been a proud resident of Avalon Beach, in the seat of Pittwater on Sydney’s Northern Beaches for 16 years. Raised in a blue-collar family in Western Sydney, I worked in government corporations in the utilities sector for 17 years before branching out as an entrepreneur in the water, electricity, gas and renewables industries. For 35 years I owned and operated companies locally and nationally, employing hundreds of tradespeople and providing technical services to utilities in all states and territories.

I am driven by a strong desire to advance a small-government approach to the most pressing social and economic priorities of our time: housing, infrastructure, energy, environment, water, food security and health. In particular, I advocate for a more sensible energy policy that prevents a focus on “Net Zero” from destroying nature and jobs. I also believe passionately in individual liberty of choice, supported by a free market, small government, and freedom of speech.

As a believer in “Education, NOT Indoctrination”, over the past 20 years, and especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, I have become increasingly concerned by the deception and fear created by one-sided narratives from corporations, government, the bureaucracy, and the mainstream media. In seeking to serve the people of Pittwater, I champion cutting red tape and taxes. I am determined to eliminate wasteful use of taxpayers’ money on ideas and projects that put NSW state finances at risk, and to fast-track the vital housing, infrastructure and state roads that the people of Pittwater and NSW urgently need to have completed.

Why should we vote for you?

Pittwater deserves better representation. As a local mum, former lawyer, and small
business owner, I understand our community and will be your voice in parliament. We can’t change the government in this by-election, the choice is between an influential independent on the crossbench, or a powerless backbencher in opposition (noting that the Liberal candidate agrees that she can’t get anything done unless the Liberals are in power, which is at least two years away). I’ll represent the sensible centre and fight for our community. I’ll hold the Minns government to account and work to get results – like finishing Mona Vale Road and pushing back against blanket planning laws. I’m here to listen and act for Pittwater, not a political party.

I believe the top biggest concerns for Pittwater residents are:

Roads and infrastructure: I’ll fight to reinstate funding for the Mona Vale Road upgrade, ensure Wakehurst Parkway works are completed, and that our roads are properly maintained.

Lowering the cost of living and supporting small businesses: I’ll work to reduce stamp duty on soaring home insurance, lower energy bills and am supportive of Active and Creative Kids vouchers. As a former business owner, I’m also passionate about making it easier for businesses to hire and grow, including advocating to reduce the payroll tax burden.

Better health: Our hospital staff work tirelessly, but decisions by the Liberal Party have let Pittwater down. I’ll push for better care at Northern Beaches Hospital and expanding public services at Mona Vale Hospital, and advocate for better pay for frontline workers.

Protecting beautiful Pittwater: I’ll push back on state-led planning changes, prevent reckless development, particularly in bushfire-prone areas, and advocate for sensible housing options, in the right places, that helps keep our community together, including for essential workers.

Schools, sport and transport: Improve bus and Keoride services and better fund our schools including Narrabeen Sports High and get Narrabeen Athletics Track reopened.

Climate action, health and a stronger economy: I’ll be Pittwater’s voice in parliament on statewide issues. I’ll continue to stand up for climate action, like our community did in pushing to ban drilling for oil and gas off our coastline, advocate to stop building in flood zones and end native forest logging which is subsidised by taxpayers. I’m also committed to preventative health, including reducing forever chemicals in our drinking water.

Why should we vote for you?

Our community is facing serious cost of living challenges and only the Liberals have a plan to help you with these pressures.

My priorities, if elected, will be to fight for funding to Mona Vale Road West and flood-proof the Wakehurst Parkway, giving locals a voice by opposing Labor’s one-size-fit-all planning changes and inappropriate local development, helping local families by restoring cost of living support like Active Kids, and reversing Labor’s local public school funding cuts.

This is important because under this Labor Government things are getting worse.

We’ve seen Labor cut funding for Mona Vale Road, cut cost of living support and impose one-size-fits-all planning reforms, which will see inappropriate development across the Northern Beaches and more strain on our local roads and schools. That’s why Pittwater needs someone who’ll stand up against Labor and fight for local families.

The Independents have failed to stand up against Labor and have even supported their cuts to cost of living support.
