New Boathouse Group bar ‘Espy’ dives onto Manly’s Sea Life site

What in the West Esplanade is happening at the former Sea Life Aquarium site?

A whole lot of nothing followed by a lot, and in a short space of time, it seems. Having closed in 2018, demolition finally got underway earlier this year and then a construction team was on site on Friday pouring concrete over the base of the aquarium.

It’s now been determined that rather than removing the entire facility as initially planned, the circular base will remain in place, as it costs less than removing it, and has fewer impacts on the marine life thriving underneath.

The biggest change, however, comes today 23 December 2024, as Manly Pavilion commences a surprise installation of a Mediterranean-themed bar over about half the now public space.

Boathouse Group, which owns the Pav, confirmed with Manly Observer this afternoon that it had an 18 month lease on the site to deliver a casual outdoor food and bar offering in partnership with brewer 4 Pines.

Activation underway at West Esplanade.

Is that allowed?

Documents from Transport (who owns the site) show this is intended as a “between stages” activation with longer term community use of the site yet to be finalised. Communications from April state the three final considerations for the site will be community space such as an amphitheatre, public space including water fountains, or  commercial food and beverage use. “We are exploring several options for the site’s final use. All options will consider the area’s importance to the local community and its Aboriginal heritage and include for example public art, educational installations or landscaping, which respects and celebrates the culture and history of the area,” it states.

In a later update from this year, Transport states “The circular footprint area will be open to the public with opportunities for temporary landscaping, seating and community activation being explored while planning for the site’s revitalisation is completed.”

The Boathouse Group saw their chance and grabbed it, with their activation of the site underway just days after the concrete dried over the weekend.

So what’s coming ?

“The Espy will launch on Boxing Day to add a casual outdoor offering to the Manly Pavilion Precinct in West Esplanade”, a press release states.

“After the demolition of the old Manly Sea Life Aquarium, the site has been transformed into a Mediterranean inspired venue right on the water, with unobstructed views down Sydney Harbour.”

Ben Collis from The Boathouse Group, said: “We are proud to announce this exciting addition to Manly just in time for summer, finally the iconic waterside location can be enjoyed again by the community after the aquarium closed back in 2018.

“The Espy offering has been crafted with Northern Beaches locals in mind. It’s perfect for families, dog-friendly and serves up a no-fuss menu with a great range of beers from our pals at 4 Pines.”

“The opening of The Espy adds more variety to the precinct’s offering alongside the recent refurbishment of Manly Pavilion Bar & Bistro, The Cove Weddings & Events, Manly Art Gallery & Museum and Manly Waterworks.”

“It’s really fantastic to see this precinct coming back to life with a range of offerings that appeals to all demographics,” said Collis.

Open 7 days from 11am – late, The Espy menu includes raw seafood, fresh salads, classic fish & chips, burgers and pizza.

We will be seeking comment from Council and local community representatives after Christmas, or earlier if possible.

Responding to concerns the public was losing planned open space, Manly MP James Griffin said a lively space was better than another two years of being boarded up.

“After years of being a derelict eyesore, the site will be a great new space for people to enjoy the view and access the water,” he said.

“I look forward to the long term plan to appropriately activate the site and ensure it delivers a great outcome for the community and in the meantime I know the Manly Pavilion will be a great presence on half the site. They will also ensure that we aren’t relying solely on Council Rangers to manage rubbish and litter as they’re in short supply.

Keeping the place fenced up for another year whilst Transport for NSW determine next steps isn’t a great outcome for anyone.”

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said,

“Furniture, planter pots and lighting will continue to be installed on the former Manly Sea Life site in January 2025.

Transport for will trial the mixed-use space and seek community feedback on the final plans for the site’s revitalisation in 2025.”
