A local mechanic threw his hat in the ring to be the representative for Mona Vale before Saturday’s upcoming federal election – the only issue? That seat doesn’t exist.
Northern Beaches locals have had a chuckle this week after Star Garage owner, Nate Newell placed his corflutes among the likes of Mackellar representative Dr Sophie Scamps and her opposition James Brown.
Videos and pictures of the custom-made political signs went viral as friends and family chanted for their fairytale federal member.
“We thought a bit of parody, a bit of comic relief in this challenging economic times, bit of a distraction,” Nate told Manly Observer, while leaning on a Ford Falcon XY next to his son, Zach, who also works in the garage, ” We’re getting a lot of people call up saying where are you on the ballot paper, that sort of stuff.
“We had someone who is running for government in our workshop. And we thought, well, gee, wouldn’t it be fun if we ran, or I ran? And then off it went.”
Unlike the other legitimate members among him, Nate’s interests advertised on his signage were a bit more personalised to his lifestyle. Dogs, fixing cars and metal were his talking points, which became apparent very quickly as heavy metal blasted through the workshop.
We asked Nate, if by some miracle he had been elected into parliament come Saturday night, what changes would he make around his area.
“Dogs on the beach,” he answered without hesitation.
“More metal,” Zach added.
“Would we fix the roads?” Nate asked his son.
“Potholes,” he replied.
“We’d fix the potholes,” Nate assured.
Unfortunately, locals will not be able to vote to ‘Make Australia Nate Again’ while at the ballots this Saturday ahead of the federal election.
However, if they have a car that needs repairing, then Nate and his team will be able to look after you from their Star Garage in Mona Vale.
