Ferry chaos as suspected steering issues cancel most services

Confidential sources have informed Manly Observer that steering issues with the smaller Manly Ferries (Emerald 2s) have taken the whole fleet offline, causing commuter chaos this morning 6 May.

Multiple sources have now indicated a serious steering failure late last week during an evening service. This saw the ferry pulled off for inspection. With no clear cause identified, we understand the remainder of the Gen 2 fleet also needed to be pulled off line.

These claims have not been confirmed by official sources, but we have questions with Transport and the Transport Ministry.

These Emerald ferries were spotted in Indonesia recently on their way to Australia. They are expected to replace the Freshwater fleet of ferries in 2021.

Transport has, however, confirmed “maintenance” as the reason for reduced services.

The larger ferries (Freshwater Class), remain docked at Circular Quay during peak periods. They have a capacity of 1100.

Manly MP James Griffin told Manly Observer: “This doesn’t cut it. If there are issues with the Emeralds, then instead of packing up and going home, they should be running the Freshwater Ferries of which so much effort was put into saving.”

The bus network is also experience significant pressure with a shortage of available buses this morning.

More information to come.
