North Head Sanctuary Discovery Day
Sydneysiders are invited to visit North Head Sanctuary in Manly for Discovery Day – a free spring event
celebrating this coastal headland where history and nature are deeply intertwined.
North Head Sanctuary Discovery Day is a chance for locals and visitors alike to engage in free activities while enjoying the area’s vibrant plant and animal community, scenic lookouts and its Wildflower season with many natives in bloom including the flannel flower and star flowers.
Experiences include guided tours, arts and crafts for the kids, North Fort – Open Access to historic landmarks like the Observation Post usually only available on a guided tour.
There is also WOTSO’s charity BBQ raising funds for the Kids with Cancer Project.
Bandicoot Heaven is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the outdoor volunteer-run visitor community hub operated by the North Head Sanctuary Foundation where visitors can learn about the local fauna and flora.
National Heritage Listed North Head Sanctuary protects 74 hectares of remnant bushland adjoining Sydney
Harbour National Park. It is home to diverse native flora and fauna as well as an important remnant military
complex that once defended Sydney at a time when there were concerns about Sydney’s vulnerability to
potential naval attacks.
Presented by the Harbour Trust with support from tenants and partners, North Head Sanctuary Discovery
Day offers a mixed program of curated all-ages experiences ranging from yoga
and birdwatching to pickleball and educational guided tours.
Some of the experiences include guided wildflower walks, an insider’s tour with a Harbour Trust Ranger,
First Nations-led walk and weave, ecology tour to learn about the headland’s endangered small mammals,
face painting and kids’ crafts on the Sanctuary Lawn.
For curious visitors, our heritage open doors offer a rare chance to step inside North Head’s Second War
Battery Observation Post, the historic gun emplacements and the North Fort tunnels usually closed to the
public and only available through Harbour Trust guided tours.
Visitors can also spend a leisurely Father’s Day immersed in nature, with birdlife, historic landmarks,
walking trails and sweeping harbour views to discover
