2024 Environmental Art & Design Prize finalists announced

Northern Beaches Council have selected the finalists in the 2024 Northern Beaches Environment Art & Design Prize, which received almost 700 competition entries. This year’s brief focused on “innovative and thought-provoking works that respond to the theme of environment, with an aim to inspiring action towards a sustainable future.”

The full list of the 2024 finalists – 200 chosen from 680 submissions – can be viewed here.

The finalists in the four categories, Art, Design plus two Youth age groups (7-12 years and 13-18 years) will see their creations exhibited at three separate galleries on the Northern Beaches from 2 – 25 August. (See details and weblinks below.)

Mayor Sue Heins, who expressed her delight that there was an increase in submissions from younger artists and designers, said, “The level of entries confirms that the climate, environmental concerns, and the natural world are the key concerns of many artists and designers.

“I certainly don’t envy the judges, who have a challenging time narrowing down the finalists to just 2 winners in the Art and Design categories, and shared winners in the Young Artists & Designers category.”

The judges tasked with determining those winners are themselves three renowned experts in their field: Genevieve Smart, fashion designer; Trent Jansen, industrial designer; and Khaled Sabsabi, visual artist.

They will announce their decisions on Thursday 1 August at 6.30pm in the Manly Art Gallery & Museum (one of the three venues hosting the artworks).

The pool of prize money increased this year, with the respective winners of the Arts and Design categories each receiving $20,000, and the youth contenders eligible for $3,000.

Furthermore, there is a People’s Choice Award for the three most-appreciated exhibits chosen by the public at each of the three venues hosting the awards finalists.

You can vote for your favourite artwork from when the exhibitions commence on 2 August until the deadline for submissions on 21 August. The three respective winners of the People’s Choice Award will be announced on 23 August and they will receive $1,000 each in prize money.

Finalists in the 2024 Northern Beaches Environmental Art & Design Prize will exhibit their work from Friday 2 to Sunday 25 August, between 10am – 5pm daily, at these Northern Beaches venues…
