Fish and chips. The best combo ever right? The thing is, if not made correctly you can ruin this iconic dish in seconds.
Why? The batter must be light and crispy. The fish must be soft and flaky and most of all the chips can’t be soggy. I say this with such authority as food-loving Brit fish and chips is serious business for me.
So when offered the chance to review Fish and Lemonade, situated just on Manly Wharf, I was keen to see if they had got this combo right.
First things first this cafe style joint offers their fish and chips with a fresh, icy cold lemonade so we were already off to a good start.
You can opt for fancy flavours too such as blue spirulina, watermelon and pomegranate as well as their original lemonade which is cold pressed to retain all the lemony goodness.
These fresh zingy drinks went perfectly with our food. We ordered traditional battered fish and chips, calamari and potato scallops and grilled barramundi with a Greek salad.
The battered fish was a winner. Light crispy batter with moist flaky fish. The barramundi wasn’t too bad either. Super fresh and served with a moreish chilli butter and paired perfectly with the fresh salad with generous cubes of feta.
The potato scallops were divine. Totally addictive and served in a perfect light batter. As were the calamari which were tender and delectably fresh.
My only beef was with the chips. They were more french fries than the traditional thick cut chip often served with fish and were a little on the bland side.
If I could make one improvement, I would simply suggest them serving with freshly made chunky chips rather than stringy French fries. Chances are kids probably prefer the French fry style but for a traditionalist like me it was a little disappointing when everything was so on the money.
Overall, the food was great, the restaurant perfectly situated a great start to your Manly night out or end to a lazy day on the beach.
