Obituary: Philip Ross Clay

Philip Ross Clay
14 February 1956 – 24 September 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Manly resident Philip Clay, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, barrister and playwright. Phil passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on 24 September 2024, leaving a lasting legacy in the hearts of those who knew him.

Cherished and loving husband of Robyn. A much-loved father and father-in-law to Nicholas and Christine, Jessica and Michael, and Lucinda. Proud “Papa” to his grandchildren Lincoln, Hannah, Zoe, and Max. Brother to Stephen and Peter (dec).

Philip’s professional career as a lawyer spanned four decades. He was a solicitor for 12 years, then barrister for over 25 years, being appointed senior counsel in 2011, culminating in being appointed Acting Commissioner of the Land and Environment Court of NSW from 2019-2022, until ill-health prevented him from continuing in this role he loved. The courtroom was his stage, where he combined intellect with improvisational skill, always ready to seize the moment and assist the parties find resolution- just as he lived his life and embodying his favourite phrase, Carpe Diem.

For much of his life, Phil lived on the Northern Beaches apart from a 30-year stint on the North Shore. Eight years ago, he and Robyn returned to Manly, a place where they truly felt at home.

In recent years, Phil’s connection to the local community flourished as a founding member of the Manly Theatre Group (MTG), where he served as both Vice President and President. His vision and passion were instrumental in building the theatre company from the ground up, and his legacy continues with the annual Manly Festival of Short Plays held in November, which he established. He was a dedicated mentor and coach, inspiring others to write their own plays, many of which have since graced the stage. The Festival’s Philip Clay Award, given to those who make significant contributions to the theatre, now carries an even deeper meaning in his memory.

A gifted writer, playwright, and performer, Philip’s creative works Bus StopManhoodTime, and Fantasy have touched audiences far and wide. His play Bus Stop achieved international acclaim through the Short and Sweet festivals, most recently reaching Hollywood. Phil’s plays, filled with wit, depth, and raw humanity, will live on as a published anthology, a lasting testament to his extraordinary storytelling. His passion for theatre and musicals was boundless – he could recite the lyrics to countless songs and had a particular fondness for Hamilton, which he and Robyn enjoyed together on Broadway, the West End, in Melbourne and in Sydney as recently as August this year.

In his final act, he embodied resilience and a full-hearted attitude to life. His sharp wit, generous spirit, and kindness leave an enduring impact on those that knew him.

A celebration of Phil’s life will be held at The Q Station, 1 North Head Scenic Drive, Manly, on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at 3:00 PM. Family and friends are warmly invited to join in honoring his memory.
