A 24-year-old man has been charged with misconduct and negligent driving after hitting two cyclists with his vehicle on the Northern Beaches yesterday morning, 4 June 2024.
Sadly, it was confirmed this morning (6 June) that one of the riders has died following brain surgery.
About 6.10am today (Tuesday 4 June 2024), emergency services were called to Forest Way, Belrose, after reports of a crash involving two cyclists and a car.
Officers attached to Northern Beaches Police Area Command attended along with NSW Ambulance paramedics, who treated both cyclists.
One cyclist – a 47-year-old man – was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition. We understand he has had brain surgery overnight. He has since passed away.
The other cyclist – a 56-year-old man – was taken to the same hospital with serious injuries.
Manly Observer chooses to withhold their names – though publish elsewhere – until approval has been provided by the families.
A witness to the scene but not incident described seeing two “mangled bikes”, another on scene said the vehicle appeared to undertake the cyclists at speed.
A crime scene was established, which was forensically examined by police from the Crash Investigation Unit.
The driver – a 24-year-old man – was uninjured and underwent mandatory testing at a hospital before he was taken to Manly Police Station.
The man has since been charged with negligent driving (occasions grievous bodily harm) and cause bodily harm by misconduct in charge of motor vehicle.
He was granted conditional bail to appear before Manly Local Court on Wednesday 24 July 2024.
The charges may soon be upgraded.
