Michael Muir Exhibition – a significant survey
A major survey exhibition celebrating more than a decade of work by acclaimed Northern Beaches-based artist Michael Muir at Manly Art Gallery & Museum.
Michael Muir: The Shape of Colour brings together key works from across Muir’s recent career, tracing the development of his distinctive painting practice shaped by colour, memory, travel and a deep connection to place.
Northern Beaches Mayor Sue Heins said the exhibition was a wonderful opportunity to experience the work of one of the region’s most accomplished contemporary painters.
Muir’s dream-like works move between coastal landscapes, suburban streets and urban environments, using simplified forms, architecture and geometry to explore belonging, perception and human connection.
Working mainly with a palette knife, Muir builds richly textured surfaces that flatten and reconfigure perspective. His compositions combine abstraction and figuration to create carefully balanced visual worlds that are contemplative, immersive and emotionally resonant.
A multiple finalist in the Wynne and Sulman Art Prizes, Muir’s work is represented in major public collections including Artbank, Macquarie University, Mosman Art Gallery and NSW Parliament.
