Living art gallery to bridge education funding gap
AVALON VILLAGE TRANSFORMS INTO LIVING ART GALLERY AS PARENTS BRIDGE EDUCATION FUNDING GAP
When government funding covers just 95% of a child’s education, parents get creative. This December, Barrenjoey High School’s P&C volunteers are transforming Avalon Village into an outdoor art gallery, proving that community spirit can bridge the gaps left by inadequate public education funding.
Following on from last year’s success, the Barrenjoey Artwalk 2025 will see local retailers showcase stunning works by Australian artists in their shop windows for two weeks, with 70% of sales supporting artists and 30% funding vital school resources that government funding doesn’t cover.
The Education Funding Reality:
While government funding supports private school students with sometimes more than 90%, as well as often $30,000+ annual fees, public school families face a different reality. Parents donate hundreds of volunteer hours organising community events to ensure their children receive the educational opportunities they deserve.
This year’s Artwalk features major Australian artists including the legendary Reg Mombassa, whose iconic imagery helped shape Australia’s creative identity through Mambo and Mental As Anything. His participation underscores the Artwalk’s growing reputation as a cultural event of significance on the Northern Beaches.
A Win-Win Model:
- Artists receive 70% commission – significantly better than traditional galleries
- Retailers gain foot traffic and community goodwill at no cost
- School receives vital funding for educational enhancements
- Community enjoys two weeks of accessible art and cultural celebration
Beyond Fundraising:
The Artwalk demonstrates how public schools drive community engagement when given support. Barrenjoey High School students and families are creating lasting economic and cultural value for the Northern Beaches region.
