Community Day at Q Station Manly
In 2024 Q Station was awarded a Commonwealth Heritage Grant to complete conservation works on the sandstone inscriptions in the Wharf Precinct. On Sunday 8th September seize your opportunity to join a free tour of the heritage Quarantine Station which in part discovers why these extraordinary carvings continue to bring people together.
For thousands of immigrants, the Quarantine Station marked the end of a lengthy journey and the start of a new life. It was the place where their first steps were taken on Australian soil. For others, a stay in quarantine mixed the joy of returning home with the frustrations and fears of having to endure a situation beyond their control. The experiences of those who were quarantined are today commemorated in historical evidence. Physical inscriptions on the sandstone, photos of reunions or the placing of monuments in the landscape all show the wish for those moments in time to be marked.
In conjunction with NSW Heritage Council’s history week, Q Station is offering a free 2-hour tour for visitors to discover this history. ‘Marking Time in Quarantine’ will take you on a journey through the site and its history to discover how those who had experiences of quarantine left their mark on the site.
The focus of the current conservation project under the Heritage Grant is the selection and repainting of key inscriptions within the Wharf Precinct. We’re interested in which inscriptions are significant to you. Between 10:30am and 12:00pm on the 8th September drop by to chat to our Interpretation Officer to learn more about this project and how you can nominate an inscription for repainting. There will also be an opportunity to see inside the Quarantine Station’s Moveable Heritage Collection Store from 1:00pm – 3:00pm. No bookings required for both.
